What is Vibe Coding? A Complete Introduction

Start With a Real Scenario
Imagine you have an app idea in your head.
In the past, turning that idea into a real product meant: learning a programming language, understanding the difference between frontend and backend, setting up a database, configuring a deployment environment, debugging error messages you couldn’t understand… just the preparation work alone could take months.
Now it’s different.
You can describe what you want to build in plain language, AI writes the code, and you focus on judging the output, testing, and steering the direction. The whole process feels more like “collaborating with an assistant who knows how to code” than learning a technical discipline from scratch.
That’s Vibe Coding.
What is Vibe Coding?
Vibe Coding is a software development approach where AI is the primary tool for writing code, and the human is responsible for guiding direction and evaluating results.
The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, in early 2025. He described being fully immersed in an AI-assisted development flow — barely writing any code himself, just giving instructions, testing results, and adjusting direction. The whole process had a certain fluid, intuitive quality to it. Hence: Vibe Coding.
The core idea is simple: you describe what you want, AI generates the code, you decide if it’s right.
How is it Different From Traditional Development?

Vibe Coding doesn’t mean you need zero technical knowledge — you still need to understand basic concepts to judge whether what the AI produces is correct. But the barrier to entry is significantly lower, and the speed is significantly higher.
Who is Vibe Coding For?
Great fit:
- Founders with product ideas but no engineering background
- Solopreneurs who want to validate ideas quickly
- Designers and product managers who want to build their own prototypes
- Developers who have some basics but are stuck at “can’t ship a complete product”
- People like me who didn’t start building seriously until age 50
Not a great fit:
- Systems requiring extremely high reliability (financial infrastructure, core medical systems)
- Security-critical infrastructure
For most independent builders who want to ship a web app quickly and validate a business idea, Vibe Coding is the most efficient approach available today.
Common Tools
The core of Vibe Coding is AI assistance. The most commonly used tools:
- Cursor — currently the most popular AI editor; have a conversation with AI directly inside your IDE to modify code
- Claude Code (Anthropic) — particularly strong at understanding complex architectural problems
- Codex (OpenAI) — good for quick generation and explanation
Key Terms Explained
When you enter the world of Vibe Coding, you’ll encounter a lot of terminology. Here are the most important ones:
Frontend / Backend / Full-stack
Frontend is everything the user can see and interact with — the visual layout of a page, buttons, forms.
Backend is everything the user can’t see — handling login logic, storing data, processing calculations.
Full-stack means both frontend and backend combined.
vibefast.app is a full-stack template. The frontend uses Remix, and both frontend and backend run on Cloudflare Workers.
Edge Computing
Traditional servers are located in a fixed place — say, a data center in the US East Coast. When a user in Hong Kong visits your site, the data has to travel to the US and back, creating latency.
Edge computing distributes your code and data across nodes around the world. User requests are automatically routed to the nearest node. A user in Hong Kong gets served by a nearby node; a user in Germany gets served by a European node. Everyone gets fast responses.
Cloudflare has 300+ edge nodes globally. When you deploy vibefast.app, users everywhere can access it with low latency.
Cloudflare Workers
Workers is Cloudflare’s edge computing runtime. Your code runs on Workers without you managing any servers.
Workers is versatile — it can run backend API logic, and it can also run frontend SSR (server-side rendering). In vibefast.app’s architecture, the frontend (Remix) and the backend API each run in their own Worker. The two Workers communicate internally through Service Binding.
Traditional backend deployment means renting a virtual machine, installing the environment, configuring firewalls… Workers lets you just write code. Cloudflare handles the rest.
Most importantly, Workers runs at the edge, not in a fixed data center — so it’s fast, with near-zero cold start times.
Cloudflare D1
D1 is Cloudflare’s database service. Technically it’s SQLite (a lightweight database engine), running on Cloudflare’s edge network.
Your app needs to store user data, article content, order records — all of that goes in D1. D1 sits right next to Workers, so reads and writes are extremely fast.
For Vibe Coders, the practical benefit is: you can tell AI “design a table for storing user data” and the SQL it generates works directly with D1.
Cloudflare R2
R2 is Cloudflare’s file storage service — similar to Amazon S3, used for images, videos, PDFs, and other media files.
R2’s biggest advantage is zero egress fees — traditional cloud storage (like AWS S3) charges you every time a user downloads a file. R2 doesn’t.
Service Binding
This is a concept unique to Cloudflare.
In vibefast.app, the frontend (Remix) and backend (Workers API) are two separate services. The traditional approach has the frontend calling the backend API over the public internet — which creates CORS issues (cross-origin request security restrictions) that need extra configuration.
Service Binding lets the frontend and backend communicate directly inside Cloudflare’s network, without touching the public internet. The result: zero CORS configuration, faster communication, and the API isn’t exposed externally.
For Vibe Coders, this means one less thing to configure and one less source of bugs.
Monorepo
Monorepo means keeping multiple related pieces of code in a single GitHub repository.
The benefit is not needing to switch between multiple repos, and shared code is easier to maintain. Common monorepo tools include Turborepo and pnpm workspaces.
Boilerplate
Boilerplate refers to the foundational code every new project needs — things like an authentication system, database connection, deployment configuration.
This code isn’t the core of your product, but you have to set it up every time. Templates like vibefast.app have all the boilerplate pre-built so you can start directly from “product features.”
JWT (JSON Web Token)
JWT is a user authentication technology.
After a user logs in, the system gives them an encrypted “pass” (token). Every subsequent request carries this token, and the system verifies it to know “who is this user, what are they allowed to do.”
Templates like vibefast.app typically have JWT auth pre-configured — you don’t need to implement it from scratch.
Migration (Database Migration)
As your app grows, your database structure needs to change — adding a column, renaming a table.
Migration is the practice of managing these changes so you can track the history of your database structure and keep different environments (development, production) in sync.
Three Core Mindsets for Vibe Coding
To wrap up, three sentences that capture the essence of Vibe Coding:
1. Act more, think less
Don’t wait until you fully understand everything before starting. Let AI generate a version, run it, see what happens, then adjust.
2. You’re the director, AI is the executor
AI writes the code. You decide if the direction is right and whether the output meets expectations. This division of roles matters.
3. Choose the right platform and eliminate half your problems
